Kris Kowdley, MD 
Director, Liver Center of Excellence and Director of Research, Digestive Disease Institute, Virginia Mason Medical Center

Kowdley has served as Director of the Liver Center of Excellence and Director of Research at the Digestive Disease Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington since 2007.  He has also been a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle, and a physician-researcher at Benaroya Research Institute since 2007. From 2003 to 2007, Kowdley was a Professor of Medicine, from 1997 to 2003, an Associate Professor of Medicine, and from 1993 to 1997, an Assistant Professor of Medicine at University of Washington, Seattle.  He was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio from 1991 to 1993, and before that a Clinical Instructor in Medicine and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University School of Medicine. Kowdley earned his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1985 and his bachelor’s degree in Biology and Anthropology from Columbia University in 1981.  He completed his internship and residency at Oregon Health Sciences University and a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Tufts University School of Medicine.
